AI and Robots. The Future Workforce?

The other night I was sitting around my living room with some friends discussing politics. After discussing topics ranging from welfare to minimum wage we landed on an interesting topic. How will the advancement of robots and AI change the workforce and our economy? Anything can happen in the next 10 years, but what will happen if robots and AI take over even 1 third of the job market?

In my opinion that estimate is pretty conservative with how quickly technology has been advancing, but even if that is a high number, it will only be a matter of time before it becomes a reality. I would even go so far to say that within 20 years I believe we will be see robots taking over at least 75% of the workforce. So what does that mean for society if 75% of people or more are unable to work?

I know this will probably make most conservatives very uncomfortable to hear, but I believe we will be forced to impose a base income for all type of system. Of course people who are able to obtain those specialty jobs that still need to be done will likely earn more, but how else can a society survive if there is simply no way for a majority of people to work? I am of course no fortune teller so I could be totally wrong or just wrong about certain aspects, but it really is an interesting thing to think about either way.

So what are your thoughts? Do you believe we are headed towards a utopia where people live to enjoy life instead of living to work? Do you believe we will reject robots and AI or that they will never advance enough to take over a majority of jobs? Do you believe I am just a crazy person spewing nonsense? Please share your thoughts because I find the whole idea very intriguing.
